Much awaited discussion from you :) I had similar experiences and even after explanations some were adamant enough to call us sisters. It was annoying in the UG years, because I did not know how to react.Later, whenever a person miscalled me that way, I immediately asked in the most empathetic tone his/her education status and then clarify, that I was the doctor. This ensured that they don't repeat the mistake. And once there was this college guy who said he called me sister out of compassion and a brotherly attitude. I asked him if he called his Professor 'Grandpa, Grandma', Lecturer,'Uncle, Auntie, Sister'. This discrimination as you rightly pointed out is not an ignorance prevailing among the illiterates. It is larger than that. It is a corollary heritage that has been inserted into our genes since ancient times :)

Cannot agree with you more on this. The world has changed but the mind in majority of us is yet to change.

U HAVE GOT THE CORRUPTED MIND AND THINKS AND TAKES EVERYTHING IN A NEGATIVE MANNER AND UR PESSIMISTIC dr. sHALINI.

With the advent of so many technologies, almost all professions today can be handled by both men and women. We no longer need the raw muscle power of men who go hunting for family's food and women no longer need to stay at home taking care of kids.We should rise above the stereotypical ideas, preconceived notions to become a developed nation. When will all these be a reality???How can we contribute to this?? By being the change we want to see!!! Take pride in the fact that YOU contribute to that change Dr.!! This blog post of yours reminds me of the book I read. Its by Kiren Bedi titled "empowering women, As I see..."

I do not think that Postal Ministry has not done this with intention.

But I too observed that in medical industry the staff give to much importance to the designation, grade.

There will be disparity between Doctor, Nurse, warden boy, watchman. They dont treat each other as human beings.

PARIMALA said...

Dear Mr.Sasikumar
I don't know anything abt ur educational qualification and profession. If you are working in some place in some grade, you will be naturally be happy to be addressed with that post name.A watchman's job is also sacred and tough, I accept. Not everyone can work like them in shifts (day and night shifts alternatively). But if some outsider (who is new to your office)calls you a "Goorka" inside office, can you accept that? At times you may be very tired and can't present yourself with good outlook and at that time if someone addresses you as "BEGGER", can you take it lightly 'cos beggers are also human beings? What Dr. means is also the samething.

Mr. Sasikumar, if Dr.'s mind is corrupted or pessimistic, she would not 've posted this blog:

Hi Sasi kumar,
What Dr.Shalini says here is blatant truth. And this patriarchal attitude among people in higher cadres is an unhealthy situation boss. Just try to focus on what she says. You need not judge her.

And as Parimala said , everyone deserves to be addressed by the work they do. I bet u don't call ur boss as 'பெரியப்பா , மாமா, சித்தப்பா அத்தை, சித்தி '. Do you Sasi? :)

guys, pls note: the lady in green scrubs is a nurse too. Therefore all the women in the stamp are nurses and all the men are doctors. Clearly, this stamp should be a hundred years old now:(

It will change soon;I can see it in around the corner, may be in another 10 years. I remember in the movie Meet the Parents (Year 2000), Ben Stiller acts as a Nurse, whenever he introduces himself as Nurse people stare at him strangely for while. At Year 2000 America was like that, so India will take bit more time. If my guess becomes real, in these regards India will be faster than any other country.
